To-do List Before Leaving China留美行前准备清单

Make your travel arrangements

- You can book your flight tickets via travel agents or airlines. Some airlines may provide student tickets, which are cheaper. You may need your visa when booking these tickets. Make sure the agent is legal.

- A direct flight is the best and most comfortable option. There are many airlines operating from Beijing/Shanghai/Hong Kong directly to San Francisco (North California). If possible, avoid more than 1 stop when traveling, this because you will be extremely tired and many stops increase the chance of misplaced luggage. However if you have stopovers, we highly recommend that you leave at least 3 hours between your flights. If your flight transfer is within the U.S., you will need plenty of time to get through customs. Make sure to consider this so you don’t miss your connecting flight.

- Every airline has its own baggage size and weight standards. Make sure you check the accurate information with your airline. In general, you can usually bring one piece of carry-on baggage (max. 5-8kg and 115cm combined length, width and height) and one personal carry-on item (laptop bag, briefcase, etc.) onboard, and two checked baggage (max. 23kg in weight, 158cm in combined length, width and height, respectively). Remember that you are always responsible to confirm the specific applicable baggage information with your airline.

Exchange funds and apply for a credit card.

You can use American Express traveler’s check or other banks’ money order, some banks may have discounts. Its not recommended to take too much cash with you, it may be unsafe.

Make sure to have some US$ cash (coins and small bills) when you arrive. You may need to call someone directly from the airport, or need change for baggage carts, vending machines or other services.

You may apply for an international credit card from any China bank.

Airport pick up arrangement

We highly recommend that you arrange someone to pick you up at the airport upon arrival. Ask your friends or relatives for help. USCEC also provides airport pick up service for international students. If you need any help, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Housing arrangement

- All universities have different campus housing policies. For example, some universities don’t provide on campus housing for freshmen. Make sure you research your on campus housing possibilities.

- Homestay is a very good option for international students. Students adapt quickly with help of the host family.

- Renting a house or apartment can be difficult before arriving. For this you will need credit and a US social security number. Also note that the leasing period is often at least for one year.

- If you want to find an apartment, we suggest you first stay at a hotel for a shot period, and look for housing after your arrival.

- Make sure to go through the lease very carefully, and understand all aspects of it before signing.

Purchase Health Insurance

Make sure you have purchased health insurance before leaving China. You must be able to show proof of obtaining health insurance to the U.S. Customs when entering the United States.

Different universities have different health insurance policies. Some universities have a health insurance plan for international students. For example, if you are a student of Sac State, you can buy Wells Fargo Student Health Insurance by semester.

Things to take care of

- Practice your English as much as you can! Watch American TV-shows (for example on Youku), listen to American music, read books and magazines in English, practice speaking with your friends.

- Learn to drive and cook. You can apply for a California driver’s license with your Chinese driver’s license.

- Complete medical examinations and check-ups: dental, physical examination, eyesight, etc. These are very expensive for international students in the US.

- Make sure you have prescriptions filled and receive any special medication you may need.

- Copy your I-20 form, passport, transcripts, and admissions letter.

- Get your final official college transcripts and degree certificate.

- Make sure your financial support is adequate.

- Spend time with your friends and family members.

Pack your bags!

Start your packing far in advance, as it’s not an easy task. Buy good quality suitcases, they should be able to withstand rough handling. If you are not sure about the durability of your suitcase, you can use packing straps to avoid damage. However, it may be worth investing in good quality and practical luggage, especially your carry-on luggage, because you will most likely use it often when traveling in the U.S. Don’t forget to put identification tags and labels on both the inside and outside of the suitcases. This information should include your name, flight date and number, destination, and telephone and address in the U.S. This will prove to be very helpful in case your luggage is lost.

Items to pack in your personal bag:

- Passport and I-20 form, flight e-tickets and itinerary.

- Your laptop. (Never put laptop in checked luggage.)

- Other personal items you’ll use on the plane (a book, magazines, travel pillow, air-sickness medicine, pain killers or other medicine etc.).

- Money (do NOT bring too much cash with you).

- Address and phone book, especially the information of the person will pick you up.

- No liquids in more than 100ml containers that all fit in a max. 1l see-through closeable bag for all non-checked luggage!

Items to pack in your carry-on luggage:

- Copies of passport (including passport photos) and I-20 form, other important documents.

- The most essential basic items and clothes required for sustaining yourself for a couple of days, in case your checked luggage is lost and can’t be found immediately.

- Receipt of your traveler’s checks or other financial documents.

- Valuable items.

- A warm coat.

- Important medicine that you won’t use during the flight.

- No liquids in more than 100ml containers that all fit in a max 1l see-through closeable bag for all non-checked luggage!

Items to pack in your checked luggage:

There are many Chinese people living in California, and therefore many Chinese products available. Keep this in mind when packing and avoid taking too many unnecessary items. Also note that any liquids in bigger than 100ml container must be packed in checked luggage.

The following list may help you:

Clothing:

- Make sure you research the climate of the area you are going to, and pack accordingly!

- Tops, T-shirts, blouses, sweaters

- Pants, jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses

- Undergarments, jackets and coats, shoes, accessories

- You may consider bringing some clothes suitable for more formal events

- Don’t bring all clothes you own, remember that you can buy new clothes in the U.S.

Food and Kitchenware:

- A cook-book if you don’t know how to cook.

- Small amount of Chinese tea and flavoring. You can buy most Chinese products and foodstuffs at the Chinese market.

Electronics:

- New electronics, such as laptops, are cheaper to buy in the U.S.  Laptops bought in the U.S. can support most Chinese software programs.

- The voltage in the U.S. is 110V/60Hz, so make sure to bring a converter if your electronic devices are for 220V/50Hz.
